Hinterland Projects

Hinterland began in Nottingham in 2006 and is curated and directed by founder, Jennie Syson. The River Trent has approximately thirty tributaries, depending on which source one consults. Each element in Hinterland represents different streams feeding into a larger body of water.

Hinterland began in Nottingham in 2006 and is curated and directed by founder, Jennie Syson. The River Trent has approximately thirty tributaries, depending on which source one consults. Each element in Hinterland represents different streams feeding into a larger body of water. As well as being a metaphor for naturally occurring streams, an artist’s individual project also often ‘pays tribute’ to the geographical location beside the River Trent or as part of the industrial hinterland of Nottingham city centre.

Hinterland continues to work with artists on more temporary events including site specific installations, study groups and new commissions. Hinterland's forthcoming programme will include five major new commissions along the Big Track cycle route.
