Beyond Ourselves
Beyond Ourselves brings
together five innovative contemporary artists, demonstrating their different emotional
responses to understanding the natural phenomena in our universe.
Funded by the Arts Council, and coinciding with the Royal Society’s 350
anniversary and the British Art Show in Nottingham, Beyond Ourselves brings
together five innovative contemporary artists, demonstrating their different emotional
responses to understanding the natural phenomena in our universe.
The varied works respond directly to man’s quest to understand the world and his
place within it, with some marveling at our physical laws and others playfully
imagining how these might be overturned. Exploring man’s passionate engagement
with both physics and philosophy on an everyday level, Beyond Ourselves aims to
inspire a new approach for contemporary artists.
'This is a fresh and thought provoking show in which these artists are encouraging
the viewer to consider the role of imagination in our quest to understand our world
better. Their interest lies in creating innovative work that seeks to inspire all of us to
question what we know and do not know. I would like the viewer to feel as though a
door has been opened for them', Ingrid Hinton, Curator
A talented sculptor and multi award winning artist, Agata Agatowska
is originally from Poland and completed her studies at the Academy
of Fine Arts, Düsseldorf. Her pieces are exquisitely crafted playful
introductions to the role of science.
Geraldine Cox has been the recipient of multiple Arts Council Awards.
Fascinated with discovery, she works closely with eminent scientists
to expose the human aspects and processes of science. She has
recently exhibited at The Inaugural India Art Fair, and was shortlisted
for the MK Fringe Painting Prize.
Chris Dunseath is an established sculptor and has exhibited widely throughout
the U.K. His work references scientific theory but humanises it
through the use of homemade materials. It attempts to represent
some aspects of the complex and extraordinary ideas of Relativity
and Quantum Physics. Chris is a member of both the The Royal
British Society of Sculptors and the Royal West of England Academy.
Sam Knowles graduated from Wimbledon College of Art in 2009. He has

physical laws by illustrating the effects of human intervention on
them. In 2010 she has been part of ‘ Parlour Ecole Loqueteuse’ at
the Ragged School Museum, London and ‘Walter Joseph
Steinersson’ performance at the Stedefreund Gallery, Berlin.
