Point of View: Helen Stevenson
Local artist Helen Stevenson is predominantly influenced by the geographical context of our lives and the spaces and places in which we live and move around.
She is drawn to aspects of our towns which are either so obscure or so familiar to us that they exist as an unconscious and often unnoticed part of our physical world - yet these aspects are often solid in our mental maps. Helen redefines photographic images of these scenes by representing them with unnatural colours - altering perception of the image giving new context in which the viewer can see them.
Helen’s paintings reflect urban environments depicted as a realm of fantasy through abstract mark making and unnatural colour rendition. This notion reminds us that we have strong connections with our urban identity even when the true physical environment is far removed from reality.
Helen’s exhibition can be seen at the Harrington Mill Studios, Turret H, Leopold Street, previewing on Saturday 31st July at 6.30pm. The exhibition continues through August and can be seen by appointment arts.helen@googlemail.com
