You will also gain useful, practical insights into marketing and communications for the arts, including fundraising and hospitality. The sessions will take on a variety of different formats, such as a reading room approach whereby a previously set text on art history or critical theory will be discussed and debated, or a lecture illustrated by visual examples. You will be provided with practical advice on writing press releases, copy for exhibition catalogues and writing short texts for exhibitions and events. There will also be the opportunity for you to attend field trips to exhibitions, artists’ studios and to meet other curators in Nottingham in order to provide further opportunities for learning.

This course responds to a growing interest in the subject of curating and a need to promote an understanding of the rigorous study required to work in the museums and galleries sector and as an independent curator. It provides valuable background insights for artists who might wish to work in a curatorial capacity on how to present their own work or that of others. The course is ideal for recent graduates in art and design, art history and photography who may be thinking of taking up postgraduate study, and is also suitable for individuals who just want to find out what curating is and brush up on their knowledge of recent art history.

By the end of the course you will have created a proposal for a real or theoretical exhibition, gained the knowledge to tackle grant forms, investigated the curating activities in Nottingham and generated a network of local contacts to take your idea further.
