Jennie Syson

This is a last  nudge about the deadline for submissions for the Sideshow Commissions, which is on MONDAY 31st MAY at 5pm.

EMAIL

All submissions should be sent to jennie@nottinghamvisualarts.net or alternatively to this brand new Sideshow email address jennie@sideshow2010.org

(All future correspondence about Sideshow will be via this email address.)

POST

If you’d prefer to send something through the post then send it to me at:

The Reading Room, One Thoresby Street, Nottingham. NG1 1AJ.

We will not accept any packages delayed in the post.

DELIVERY BY HAND

If you’re running horribly late on Monday, I will be in The Reading Room all day to accept last minute proposals by hand.

APPLICATIONS & ADVICE

Many of you will have been to see me for a surgery session in the Reading Room or phoned me for advice. If you have not had a chance to do this, or fill in an expression of interest form, please don’t worry, you are still eligible to submit an idea even if you haven’t had a chance to run it past the Sideshow team. It’s just important you follow the instructions on the application form – the most important part being to demonstrate that your idea is something of high quality and above and beyond what you would ordinarily be able to achieve.

Please note if you have only filled in an expression of interest form – this does not count as a proposal. You need to submit an application form too. (Click here for the link to Nottingham Visual Arts where you can download the form.)

BUDGET

I’ve had many enquiries over the last few weeks about budgets for project proposals. We’ve deliberately not set an upper limit to what you can apply for so as not to curtail ambition – and so that projects will fulfil the ‘above and beyond’ criteria. If it’s helpful, most projects fit in to 1 or 3 brackets: £500-£1000 or £2000-£3000 or £5000. Most projects I have advised to claim for one of the first 2 categories; unless you have a large group of people where it might be more appropriate to apply for up to £5000. It’s important to remember however, that this isn’t a hard and fast rule and that projects will be assessed on their quality and ability to fit the criteria on the form – not necessarily on their value for money. So remember to pay yourselves properly in your estimates and ensure you won’t be personally out of pocket.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

The selection panel, comprising Kitty Anderson from the Common Guild in Glasgow; Rob Bowman from Artangel in London; Lotte Juul Petersen from Wysing Art Centre and Juneau Projects will meet in Nottingham over the course of 2 days in the first week in June to carefully go over your proposals. It’s important to send good images with your application so your practice and/or your idea comes across in the best light.

WHEN YOU’LL HEAR FROM US

We plan to get back to you individually as soon as we can. This is likely to be in mid June. Wherever possible we will give feedback about the selection process.

I’m pleased to report that I’ve had nearly 80 meetings with a variety of artists based in Nottingham and beyond and the programme looks set to be an amazingly diverse and broad spectrum of activities and events.

I’ll be in touch again soon with more information about registering your venue for Sideshow; when you'll receive your 'Sideshow Welcome pack'; how to submit work for the open exhibition, ‘Wunderkammer’; opportunities for employment and volunteering and what to do next if your proposal is unsuccessful.

Best of luck!

Please feel free forward this information to whomever you think it will be useful to.
