Background information:

Incorporating many different voices through user-generated content in documentary film seems to be the digital age’s response to Jean Rouch’s concern in the 1950’s of greater participation by the ethnographic other. User-generated content eliminates the middleman by allowing subjects access to cameras and the ability to produce their own footage. User-generated content provides points-of-view previously unavailable to the documentary filmmaker, however the originally democratic intent of user-generated content is ultimately usurped by the point of view of the editor in documentary films. The three finished films will be an exploration into the dichotomy of the editor.

USER GENERATED CONTENT is an exhibition about social media, self-publishing and the virtual environments that we create for ourselves. The exhibition will be an exploration into the deepening relationship we now have with technology with regards to the social aspects of our lives.

The term ‘social media’ has been defined by Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein – and has been categorized into 6 different forms. These have been identified as collaborative projects, blogs and microblogs, content communities, social networking sites, virtual game worlds, and virtual communities. User Generated Content is a term to describe the various interactive online activities.
