THIS IS NOT A PERFORMANCE OR A LECTURE!Saturday 18 June 2011 : Loughborough University CampusFrank Abbott, Robin Deacon, Jenny Hogarth/Kim Coleman, Janice Kerbel, Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Ruth Proctor, Neal Swettenham and Michael Pinchbeck, Jennet Thomas
Symposium: Visual/Performance Interface, 17 June, 2.00-6.30
Join us for a day of experimental live performance taking place across the University campus. The work takes the notion of the performance lecture, utilising some of the spaces or tools of a lecture, but expanding it into a highly theatrical and visual event. This is Not a Performance or a Lecture! is a programme which blurs fact with fiction, instruction with the dramatic, as artists test and dissect our understanding of what might constitute a performance lecture. The afternoon will include seven new commissions, taking place in lecture theatres, sports halls and performance spaces that respond to the unique and complex challenges the performance lecture format presents, purposefully meandering from performance to lecture and back again.
This will be accompanied by an afternoon symposium on the 17 June that will explore and debate the porous lines of affinity and bias that connect and separate what are loosely termed visual arts and performing arts. The symposium will bring together artists and curators, who are employing techniques across shifting disciplinary lines, into conversation with academics and a journalist who are critically exploring this area, in a lively dialogue, discussing how flexible practices benefit artistic inquiry, challenge institutional approaches and develop spaces for rapport between often segregated worlds.
