NVA ISSUE 4: OUT NOW

Nottingham Visual Arts

Nottingham Visual Arts is a publication and website for and about all forms of visual art and culture currently taking place in and around the city of Nottingham. Its contributors comprise curators, artists and writers involved in the Nottingham scene and its contents contains reviews, comment and documentation of events taking place within the city and beyond. NVA tracks the progress of artists from Nottingham exhibiting in other cities and provides a useful commentary for visitors, making it possible to navigate the flourishing studio scene and artist led events which often happen throughout the year alongside more municipal programmes of institutions such as Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Castle and the New Art Exchange.

In 2010, NVA organised the fantastically successful Sideshow – complimentary events which took place during the British Art Show 7. Sideshow supported the growing artist-led scene and do-it-yourself attitude towards contemporary art and presented 15 new artists commissions involving 100 artists from the UK collaborating with 50 organisations, plus over 80 events by participating individuals and studio groups. We saw unprecedented audiences, which travelled from all over Europe.

Six months on, it’s time to catch up with artists and writers in the city to find out more about the exhibitions and events they have been visiting, curating, taking part in and reading about. Our cover article is an interview with Niki Russell, a founding member of the new Primary studios taking shape off Ilkeston Road. Hannah Conroy reflects on research, reading and inspiration; and Dan Green talks to members of Backlit Studios in Sneinton about the value of critique outside of an institutional context. Also included are reviews by Wayne Burrows and Will McRory, and an interview with Mathew Trivett. We’ve invited recent RCA Graduate and Nottingham based artist Yelena Popova to create our limited edition centrefold poster. Yelena has recently been nominated for New Contemporaries and curated The Bookmark Project for Nottingham Contemporary’s Study.

We are also pleased to announce that Nottingham Contemporary has become our first regular supporter. To find out more about how your Nottingham based arts organisation can do this and the exclusive offers on advertising and marketing NVA can provide, please contact jennie@nottinghamvisualarts.net.
