Folk Variations: Bus Tour from Nottingham

FOLK VARIATIONS SATURDAY 7 MAY 2011, 1-5pm 

Artists re-imagine folk tradition in an exploration of how histories are made and disseminated to create an afternoon programme of performance, storytelling, screenings, discussion and music. 

The afternoon of events will be launched with music, food and refreshments at 1pm in the foyer of Martin Hall on campus and concludes at Loughborough’s Carillon with Serena’s Korda’s performance and an end of day celebration.

Hands Up! A Manual: Sally O’Reilly – 1.00-2.20pm

Sally O’Reilly presents a short film which reaquaints us with the little-known Manicular Therapy, providing us with insights into the development of manners, manufacturing, mandates and itching.

Tris Vonna-Michell – 1.30pm

Responding to the architecture of the University campus, Tris Vonna-Michell reflects on how history is transmitted through spoken word in a performance-cum-installation, combining ephemeral objects with fluent and astoundingly rapid monologues.

Life in the Woods (working title): Olivia Plender and Patrick Staff – 2.30pm

Olivia Plender and Patrick Staff present extracts from the film Winstanley, which tells the story of the 17th Century Diggers movement, as a departure point for a discussion around issues raised during their experimental project into communal living in John Lees Wood. 

Training Through Production: Serena Korda – 3.45pm time to be confirmed

Mixing the University’s historical culture of ‘training through production’ and Rudolph Laban’s synchronised ‘mass movement’ Serena Korda’s new choreographed work journeys from the campus sports pitches, accompanied by live music  to a finale performance at Loughborough’s Carillon with a new musical score composed for the Carillon bells.

And ...

Storytelling workshop for children and families; live music and refreshments throughout the afternoon. Stalls providing further information on folk history and artists responses to folk culture.
